After almost one and a half year of strong protest against the production of Tata Nano in Singur plant by Trinamool Congress, the little wonder car is ready to roll out from its new mother plant. That's true. Tata Motors is ready to roll out the first batch of Nano from its newly constructed production unit at Sanand, Gujarat.

According to the automaker, the first set of Tata Nano cars from the Gujarat factory will roll out in the Indian market on the 1st of May, 2010. The day has been chosen carefully by the automaker as this day is celebrated as Gujarat Day as the state came into existence on this day in the year 1960. This year Gujarat would be celebrating its Golden Jubilee year and Tata Motors has grabbed this opportunity to build stronger rapport with the state by choosing this day for rolling out first batch of Tata Nano from its new Mother plant.

Automakers Hike Prices of Vehicles 1st April 2010

Various automobile companies have announced an increase in the prices of their vehicles from the 1st of April, 2010. This decision came as the new Bharat Stage emission norms come into effect from April 1st and the new automobiles that would be hitting the roads soon will require modifications to be compliant with the latest BS-IV norms.

Car majors like Hyundai Motors will increase the prices of diesel vehicles by 3% and prices of petrol run cars by 1.5%. General Motors, has made it clear that the company would be hiking the prices by 1.5% and the hike in prices will vary between Rs 600 and Rs 11,000."

The other auto companies who are increasing the prices of the vehicles include Tata Motors, Toyota Kirloskar Motor and Skoda Auto India. Tata Motors though has not announced any hike yet, but has also made it clear that there will be an hike in the products but at the right time. Toyota Kirloskar Motors will increase the prices between 1% and 3%.

While every automaker is announcing the price hike in vehicles, India's most popular automaker Maruti Suzuki has no plans at present to increase the rates of its products.

First Step – The very first step is to relieve the pressure in your fuel lines and fuel filter. For this you need to start the car first carefully pull the fuel pump fuse or fuel pump relay out. This should be done with engine running. This way you can release all the fuel pressure from the fuel lines. Remember, if you don't release the pressure, explosion can take place while changing fuel filter.

Second Step – The next step is to use wrenches to unbolt the fuel filter fittings. Now try sliding the fuel line off the bolt. Also unscrew the bolt on the other side of the fuel filter. Now that you have taken off the bolts, make sure you keep them properly. You will need them while fixing the new fuel filter.

When you come back to start your car, you will find that your car's key will not turn on inserting in the switch.

Solution - What you need to do is just force the steering wheel slightly in one direction. Then do the same in the other direction. Make sure you do not exert a lot of pressure towards any of the sides. Try turning the key while doing so. This way the pressure on steering lock is relieved. Now you easily turn the key.

Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Tips

The first tip always for any auto part repair is to go through the carmaker's manual. Read it carefully to avoid any kind of confusion at the time of repair. Every manufacturer specifies the time for changing of the car's spark plugs. If its time, do not delay in replacing the auto part.
It is essential to ensure that the other auto parts connected or related in the functioning of spark plugs are in proper condition. If the ignition wires have burned, they need to be changed too.
For checking the wires – Have a look at the the ignition system at night. Its easier to notice the shorting of wires at that time.
Try checking the spark plug wires by pulling each and every wire manually. First switch off your engine and let it cool for some time, else you might harm yourself. Once you pull out one wire, check it for burns, cracks or any kind of discoloration. If found O.K. fix the wire back into its position. Follow the same step to check all the wires. Any damaged wire should be immediately replaced.
Remember : Do not pull out all the wires at the same time, rather pull them one by one. Otherwise, you might get confused while fixing them in right terminals, causing more auto repair loss.
Change the Spark Plugs – the first step is to clean the debris accumulated on the well of this auto part. Avoid any dirt or dust to fall into the combustion chamber. You may also blow air into the well or brush off the debris so as to clean it properly.
Now remove the spark plug wire. The next step follows is to keep the plug socket over the plug & then unscrew it.
Its time to pick up the new plug. Now just start threading it. Only thing that you need to remember is to not cross- thread it.
Now take the plug & socket and them try lowering it into the plug well. Then screw the plug with a socket extension.
Once you get the feel that the thread have matched, you need to use a ratchet for tightening the plug in its place.

That's it friends, you have successfully replaced your car's spark plug.

Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today debuted the 2010 Tundra full-size pickup truck and an all-new 4.6-liter V8 engine at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show.

On display are two new packages, including the debut of an all-new Tundra Platinum Package and the recently announced Tundra Work Truck. Value will be enhanced on all 2010 Tundra models with the addition of standard and optional exterior, mechanical, safety and convenience feature upgrades. The 2010 Tundras will arrive at dealerships in April.

In earlier posts, I covered the driving laws of UK and New York. Lets move on to California now. Obviously common driving rules and laws are known to all and we have also covered a few (of other states & countries) in earlier posts. Now lets have a quick glance over the less common driving rules of California. Here are few little known driving laws of California stated under Driving and Traffic Laws.

Turning Upon a Highway

Section 22100.5 or 22101 of Driving Laws has clearly defined the rules of 'turning upon a highway'.

Section (a) states that while taking a right turn, upon a highway with 3 marked lanes, the driver should take a right turn into any lane lawfully available to traffic moving in that direction upon the roadway being entered. For more details on Driving Laws, read traffic laws.

Traffic Laws Regarding Signals -

One Should Give a Signal When Stopping – Section 22109 states that no person should suddenly reduce the speed of vehicle or stop while driving without giving an appropriate indication.

Hand Signals While Driving – Any kind of signal given by hand should always be given from the left side of the vehicle. Few hand signals are as follows:

For a Left turn – The driver should extend his hand and arm horizontally beyond the side of vehicle.

For a Right Turn – Driver's hand and arm should be extended upward beyond the side of vehicle.

Hand Signal While Stopping – It is a driving rule in California to indicate stopping of vehicle with hand & arm extended beyond the side of vehicle. that means if you are using your automotive braking system suddenly, you need tto give a clear indication to others on road.

Sudden Decrease of Speed – Even for sudden decrease of speed of a vehicle, the driver should give the signal with his hand & arm extended downward beyond the side of vehicle.

Slowdown While Driving Near Schools or Senior Centers

Section 22358.4. (a) (1) states that it is a one should slow down her/ his vehicle near a school or a senior center. The rule states that one should drive at a speed limit of 15 miles per hour near specified areas. So, just get your brake pads checked before you are trying to drive down near a school or senior center.

Seat Belt/ Child Restraint Violations – Section 1229 C says that violation of operation of vehicles with safety seats and safety belts is a law and anyone not abiding by this provision is subject to be guilty of a misdemeanor. This driving law means all the back seat passengers who are under the 4 years of age should be restrained in a specially designed baby car seat that is permanently affixed or is affixed to such vehicle with a safety belt.

Disobeying of Traffic Signals/ Red Light/ Stop Sign – If one does not follow traffic signs or traffic rules or jumps red light, then it is an offence under article 24.

Driving On Right Side of Roadway or Overtaking – One should never drive on the right side of roadway or try to overtake another vehicle. Article 24 also considers these acts violation of traffic laws.

No Driving on Sidewalks – It is an offence (under1225) to drive any motor vehicle on or across the sidewalks. Exception to this vehicle is that one can drive at a reasonable speed that is not more than 5 miles/ hour without disturbing the safety and passage of pedestrians.

Cling to Other Vehicle – Stated under 1253, a motorbike rider should not cling to any other vehicles on a roadway.

Operating Motorcycles on Roadways Laned for Traffic – Full use of lane is entitled to all the motorcycles till the time there is no disturbance to other motorcycles on the road. Under section 1252, no motorbike should be driven in a manner to deprive other motorcycle of the full use of a lane.

According to this law, it is an offence to drive or even attempt to drive a mechanically propelled vehicle if the person is drunk or is under the affect of drugs.

Penalty – If you disobey this rule, you might have to pay a fine maximum of £5000 or imprisonment upto 6 months or might be disqualified for 1 year and endorsement unless "special reasons" exist. In case, you face this offence twice within 10 years, you might be disqualified for a minimum of three years unless "special reasons exist"

Law Number 2 - Drunk While You Are In Charge of a Vehicle – Under section 4(2) (as amended) of The Road Traffic Act 1988, it is considered an offence if you are drunk and are in charge of a mechanically propelled vehicle on road.

Penalty - Be ready to pay a fine upto £2500 or face imprisonment up to 3 months.

Law Number 3 – Intake of Alcohol Exceeding The Prescribed Limit – Try not to indulge in drink driving and specially do not drink excessively and drive. You might be caught under section 5 (1) of The Road Traffic Act 1988. According to this law, it is an offence to drive a motor vehicle on a road with alcohol over the prescribed limit.

Penalty – Its gonna cost you a lot. You might have to pay a fine up to £5000 or face upto 6 months of imprisonment. This offence can result in a minimum of 1 year disqualification unless "special reasons" exist. A re-test can be taken and the licence must be endorsed with points (3-11). If you refuse to give your breath specimen when required to do so by a policeman in uniform.

Penalty – You are likely to pay a fine of £1000, 4 points & discretionary disqualification.

Law Number 7 – Careless Driving – The second most common driving offence worldwide. Against this offence, the driving law says under section 3 of The Road Traffic Act 1988 that its an offence to drive a mechanically propelled vehicle on a road or public place without due care and attention . Careless driving can include anything from loosing control on your braking system to hitting other vehicle on road.

Penalty - The maximum fine you might anticipate is £2500 and 3-9 points. You may be subject to be disqualified until re-test passed.

Chrysler Forms Tie up With Fiat

$6bn More Auto Aid For U.S Auto Industry

It seems it is time for General Motors to rejoice. The US government has made the announcement for expanding the auto bailout of the auto industry. The government will provide an additional auto aid of $6bn. Here's A Quick Way To Troubleshoot Auto Gauge Problems

Another car problem? Oh, is it your engine's temperature gauge this time? Not to worry, we'll discuss few troubleshooting ways to repair this automotive gauge. You must ensure that the auto gauges function properly so as to avoid any kind of damage to the vehicle's engine. There are different types of auto gauges like fuel gauge, temperature gauge, tire pressure gauge and many more.

Temperature gauge in the vehicle is installed to indicate the temperature range within which the engine is working. It is very essential that we maintain these car parts and speaking honestly, its not actually difficult to do so because problems with auto gauges can be easily diagnosed. Few small checks of these auto gauges will help you know whether you need to replace them with new temperature gauges.

Begin with the Gauge Wire. Unplug it at the sending unit. Remember, you must unplug only the temperature gauge wire. Usually, you will find the wire located on the engine.

Turn on the Ignition Key. Please ensure that you don't have to start the engine of the vehicle.

Ground this Wire to Engine. The next step that follows is of grounding the temperature gauge wire to engine. You can do this by using a jumper wire.

Keep an eye on the Temperature Gauge Needle. Check what does it indicate. If it reads 'Hot', it is time to replace the temperature sending unit.

If Needle does not read 'Hot' – In such a case, you should check the fuse whether it is fine.

Fixing the Problem - Now that you have ensured that you fuse is working fine, check the voltage. For that you need a voltmeter. You must check the voltage at ignition terminal using this voltmeter.

Found a Problem there? - You might notice that there is no voltage. If this is the case, then it is because of some damage in the circuit between the ignition key & gauge or fuse panel & gauge temperature.

Repair It – Since you have diagnosed this problem, repair or fix it. Fix the problem and test again. You may also replace the gauge.

Observe Closely – Ground the temperature gauge wire to engine with a jumper wire. Check the gauge. If its working fine, then disconnect the wire at sending unit as well as turn on the ignition.

Needle Higher then Cold Range – Does the needle this time indicate that it is a little bit higher than cold range. If it is, then unplug the wire that is going to the sending unit at the gauge. Check the gauge again by turning on the ignition key.

Watch the Needle this Time – Is it still higher than cold range, the gauge needs to be changed. Check the auto gauge, doesn't it read 'Cold'.

Gauge Reads 'Cold' – You can fix this problem of short in the wiring. It is because of this, the gauge reads cold. After the repair, test the gauge again.

These were some of the ways how you test your temperature gauge of your vehicle. Monthly checks of the automotive gauges will help you avoid any major damage of the engine. Well, as I said in the previous post that 'Go small & green' is the most in thing in the Paris Motor Show, 2008 or rather I should say this is the latest concept of the automakers, this motor show is unveiling a number of cars that advertises this concept. To me it seems to be that these green concept cars are mere promotion gimmicks or just ways to pacify the demand for lower emission vehicles (not to forget, obviously with lower fuel consumption levels.)

Popularizing the word 'greenery' that forms a part of almost every news from automotive industry, these cars are replies to issues on increasing global warming. DIY - Clean Your Car's Battery

Your car's battery provides the initial spark to get your car up and running. Timely cleaning of the battery not only ensures its longer life but also saves you from out of the blue battery troubles.

Here's all that you'll need:

Baking soda as the cleaning agent

The clean up

Pour it all over the battery, wait for 5-7 minuets before rinsing it with clean water.

5. Now wipe off the battery with a cloth/rag and let it dry. The cleanup operation is now almost complete.

6. Next, you need to mount the battery back in its place, make the connections and also apply waterproof grease to cover them.

Chrysler To Launch Electric Autos by 2010!

Chrysler's announcement of new production-intent, advanced electric-drive technology vehicles – one for each of its brands, Chrysler, Jeep® and Dodge, was quite a surprise for the auto industry.

The company will select one electric-drive model to be produced in 2010 for consumers in North American markets, and European markets after 2010. And the company expects about a hundred Chrysler electric vehicles to populate the road as a part of government, business, utility and Chrysler development fleets in 2009.

The automaker also intends to apply electric-drive technology to its front-wheel-drive, rear-wheel-drive and body-on-frame four-wheel-drive platforms in the next several years.

The Electric Vehicle Technology

The technology has three primary components: An electric motor to drive the wheels, an advanced lithium-ion battery system to power the electric-drive motor, and a controller that manages energy flow.

The Range-extended Electric Vehicle, as its known as, combines the electric-drive components of the Electric Vehicle with a small gasoline engine and integrated electric generator to produce additional energy to power the electric-drive system when needed. This set up combines the positives of an Electric Vehicle with the driving range equivalent to today’s gasoline-powered vehicles without compromises in performance.

Dodge EV

The Dodge EV development Electric Vehicle is a two-passenger rear-wheel-drive sports car that marries high performance with zero tailpipe emissions. It has a 200 kW electric-drive motor generates 650 N*m (480 lb.-ft.) of torque. Accelerates 0 to 60 mph in less than five seconds, and a top speed of over 120 mph.

Jeep EV

The Jeep EV Range-extended Electric Vehicle uses an electric motor, an advanced lithium-ion battery system, and a small gasoline engine with an integrated electric generator to produce additional energy to power the electric-drive system when needed. It has a 200 kW (268 horsepower) electric motor generates 400 N*m (295 lb.-ft.) of torque. About eight gallons of gasoline has a range of 400 miles, including 40 miles of zero fuel-consumption, zero-emissions, all-electric operation.

Chrysler EV

The Chrysler EV uses a 190 kW (255 horsepower) motor, producing 350 N*m (258 lb.-ft.) of torque, providing 0 to 60 mph acceleration in approximately nine seconds. The Chrysler EV Range-extended Electric Vehicle can drive 40 miles on all-electric power, and boasts a range of 400 miles on approximately eight gallons of gasoline.

Nucleon - Ford's Atomic Bombshell

High gas prices, environmental concerns and the wobbly auto industry asking for loans to build batteries, is the solution anywhere in sight? But Ford's engineers had an insight about 50 years ago in the form of the Nucleon concept, a car to be driven by nuclear power.

The concept car designed by Ford in 1958 was very different. Instead of an internal-combustion automobile engine, a tiny nuclear reactor was to be installed towards the rear of the vehicle. Further, a power capsule was to be placed between twin booms at the rear containing radioactive core for power. And when it ran out of fuel it could simply be replaced to recharge the car. On an average the car could travel 8000 km (5,000 miles) or even more depending on the size of the core.

The car would be steam driven, with one turbine to power the motion and the other to drive an electrical generator. The used up steam would be cooled and recirculated into the system. And the powertrain and transmission would be integral to the power module, while the electronic torque converters would be installed in the place of the drive-train in use at the time.

Such a nuclear powered car could outlast any conventional battery. And being run on steam, there won't be problems of emission too. No noise pollution or anything. A great automobile for a concept for sure. However, it never became a reality because the nuclear reactors of those times were a great deal bulkier to be fitted into a car.

Used Cars: Honda Reigns Supreme In Japan

Amidst speculations of how the Wall Street could weigh on the automotive industry sales and GM's request for the government's support on battery development, the car maker Honda has come out on top in satisfying used-vehicle owners in its home ground Japan.

The findings came to light with the release of a J.D. Power study. The study measured used-vehicle owner satisfaction with the dealership sales and delivery process based on four factors that contribute to overall satisfaction: contract and delivery; sales personnel; vehicle purchased; and facility and display.

The following chart shows the results with the points garnered by different manufacturers.
The researchers also spotted that regardless of the vehicle’s model year, customer satisfaction with manufacturer warranties was consistently higher than satisfaction with automotive dealer warranties. For instance, those who purchased a 2002 model-year vehicle or older with a manufacturer warranty, satisfaction scores were 31 points higher, on average, than among customers who received a dealer warranty.

Additionally, customer expectations about the duration of warranty coverage varied according to the cost of the warranty. Of the customers who said that they would like a free warranty included with their used-vehicle purchase, 41 percent said one year's coverage was acceptable. And of the customers who were ready to pay for warranty, 27% wanted coverage for three years, while 24 percent for five years.

The following factors contributed to overall satisfaction of customers.
The study is important because new-vehicle sales have decreased in Japan, consequently, vehicle manufacturers are focusing their efforts on used-vehicle business in order to remain profitable.

Also, as the study has shown, warranties are an important factor affecting customer satisfaction, which in turn affects recommendations and repurchase intentions. So there's a need for dealers to review their current warranty programs and bring them at par with customer needs. Further, the non-authorized used-vehicle dealerships who don't have partnerships with vehicle manufacturers need to ensure that their warranties match manufacturer warranties.

Honda seems to be in the limelight for good showing in different areas, including its concept Honda Insight which is to show up at the upcoming Paris Motor Show.

5. Continuing vehicle electrification

Today as a result of advancements in electronics, most advanced electronic items can be added within the confines of 14-volt electrical systems. Consequently, most automobiles can be steered or braked electronically without voltage architecture beyond 14 volts. More systems will come under the electrical system reach.

Honda's Insight: Make Hybrids Affordable!

As environmental concerns encourage the automotive industry towards producing greener than ever automobiles, Honda plans to showcase it's concept called “Insight” at the Paris International Auto Show. The automotive trade event, “Paris Motor Show” will run from October 2 to 19, 2008.

The new Insight Concept has styling features similar to the Honda FCX Clarity fuel cell vehicle and is claimed to be an early look at the highly-anticipated five-passenger hybrid vehicle. However, Honda's new vehicle going to be up for sale in the U.S., would be priced much below hybrids available today the company has said. Thus making hybrid technology affordabile and accessible. The original Honda Insight was introduced in December 1999 as America's first gas-electric hybrid car.

The New Vehicle Is Expected To:

Be at the forefront of fuel efficiency.
Have a roomy five passenger cabin.
Be offered as a hatchback with a five-door access.
Have folding rear seats.

Off late car makers in America and Europe have had to lobby against initiatives attempting to make it obligatory for them to manufacture much more fuel efficient vehicles and with minimum emissions. For instance, almost a year back and in US the car makers lobbied Congress against a proposal which would have forced them to achieve a fleet-average fuel consumption 35 miles per gallon (mpg) by 2020. And in Europe German carmakers registered their protest against the European Commission's proposal to impose financial penalties if their fleets emissions were more than 130 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre (g/km) by 2012, the Economist throws light on the trend.

The dynamics of the automotive industry have changed, and it's best if the auto manufacturers themselves initiate moving towards technologies that are in line with the consumers' demand as well as environmental interests. Which for now seem to have merged pretty much.
